Laptops...
My birthday is coming up soon and all I am asking from my parents and family is a laptop, now the only specifics I want out of this laptop are; it has to be able to play new games like Borderlands, G.O.W. and Rainbow 6 Vegas 2, This is because I plan to use this computer as a portable workstation for my programing which is nearing it's 3d stages, the specs I need most are;
2.5 GHZ minimum
and the graphics card has to support shaders 3.0 and higher...
Now I want the Laptop Under $500, does anyone know of a laptop that can meet these specs? or if not, can you at least find the under $500 and graphics card, because I know where to buy a Pentium 4, 3 GHZ processor...

The Dell studio line is pretty good, and they do a lot of offers for assorted hardware improvements/price cuts.
EG: My Studio 1555 I got with a dual core 2ghz chip (I later replaced that with a 3.06ghz C2D - not much added to the thermal profile, battery life suffers a bit, but hey), 4gb of RAM, 320gb hdd, 4570 512mb. I got that at £494 with a few extras that weren't free (4gb RAM upgrade from 1, 320 upgrade from 250 were free). Granted, not under $500, but it wouldn't be far off without the bits I added.
I can vouch for it playing Vegas 2, as I used to do that at work.
You say you can get a 3ghz chip - Is it a socket P?

Since they comandeered Alienware line, their Studio line have gone up, dramatically, in quality and bang-for-buck. Granted, they might not be the prettiest laptops in the world, but the Studio line is, for once, worth the money.
Their desktops are still iffy bits of crap, though.

It did the Dell line the world of good, to be honest. At least, it did their Studio line the world of good.

Well, I looked at the Studio 15 line, and used the dell customize option to build:
Studio 15 (1555)

This laptop started as a lot of money. Once I removed a bunch of stuff, like the huge hard drive(extra $80), and the graphics card (extra $150) they had was an extra $230, it's now $799... Which means since it is too close to my birthday to have it shipped I might get it for Christmas.

If you keep your eyes on it, chances are they'll be doing a deal on upgrades before you make your decision on spec.
Dell seem to like doing assorted deals like that.

ah it's 799... maybe if I wait a couple of days I can get some random discounts, I have been using the customize tool repeatedly for the same computers and every couple of days there will be a new discount for seemingly no reason.
