I have recently had it brought to my attention, that items that can float in water displace their mass and not their volume. Therefore if all the Ice at the poles melted right now, the water level would either stay the same of go down. Anyone have thoughts because I can't find anything against or for this...
Also I lost the ability to check my messages, when I click the link I get a blocker saying "Chat Site", stupid nanny...

Interesting thought - But I'm no scientist, mathematician, or even glboal warming watcher. So I can't really offer an opion either way :p

IMO doesn't matter cause I don't think their all melting. I personally believe that the ALEEUMS are taking them to their own world where they use them to cool their drinks as they used all their water to fuel hydrogen cars and to create artificial indoor atmosphere after the cut down all there plants to make room for their incredibly large dance offs(their equivalent of war) in which they now compete of control over earths icecaps.....

Here's the thing about water displacement: If the thing sinks, then it displaces it's own volume in water. However, if it floats (such as ice) then it only displaces it's weight, which is related to it's mass.

So, deducing from that, we'll still have a rise in water levels but it won't be more than 10 feet or so I don't think. But even then, that's more than enough to cover Manhattan island and a good several miles of almost any coastal state.

I wouldn't think people would be that stupid but then again if most of the icebergs stuff is below water then wouldn't the ice caps be as well or weren't they on solid land which would mean that they aren't added into the oceans total volume at all and there would be a rather large flood....

idk, but in my opinion it'd surely rise the water level to have an effect on coasts.

How about this; What would happen to the sea level, if all of the ships and boats were removed?

I would assume that even the total mass of all the ships on the water is insignificant relative to the mass of the world's sea water.

I don't know, supertankers and container ships displace hugh volumes of water. The water level of a swimming pool full of people drops if they all get out simultaneously, the sea is just a larger scale version of this.
